Prioritizing inclusivity and usability leads to better design outcomes!
When designing logos, we have an opportunity to approach them from an accessibility point of view. Following these steps helps create logos that are not only visually appealing, but also accessible to a wider audience. This approach improves inclusivity and usability across different media, platforms and devices.
6 KEY TIPS FOR ENHANCING INCLUSIVITY AND USABILITY.
1
Colour Contrast
Check contrast between elements for best visibility. Use tools like this colour contrast checker tool at AccessibleWeb.com to verify compliance with accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG).

2
Keep it Simple
Clear shapes, bold lines and a balanced use of space enhance the readability of a logo, and improves the recognizability of a logo.

3
Scalability
Design the logo to be scalable without losing its clarity or impact. Make important details larger and avoid thin lines and confusing patterns.
4
Typography and Readability
Choose typography that is clear and legible. Avoid stylized or narrow fonts as these can be challenging to read particularly for users with dyslexia or visual impairments.

5
Alternative Text
Always provide descriptive text for a logo to assist screen readers, avoid the use of the actual word “logo”.
Alt Text: THE FISHBOWL. An icon of a stylized light blue shiny fishbowl, in it a side-view silhouette of a cute navy big-eyed fish.

6
Test (and polish!)
Gather feedback and test the logo to ensure accessibility and usability. Incorporate this valuable feedback for improvement!
Examples of useful feedback: Original blue is too light in some cases; Font is a little thin for social media Gravitar.
The Fix: Lighter blue for better contrast with fish, and navy keyline border for best contrast with the white. Bolder font and widen type area with a wider “O”, echoing the shape of the Fishbowl.
Testing: See blue on white contrast test here: WEB AIM Online Web Colour Checker
